Biography
Jane Gordon McKee, born in the year 1620 at Cumloden, in the lands of Larg in Scotland, and departed this life in 1677 within her native country, stands in the family register as a 10× great-grandmother of the compiler along the paternal-grandfather (PP) line. Her life spanned a period of remarkable turbulence in Scottish history, encompassing the Bishops' Wars, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Cromwellian occupation, and the Restoration — events which shaped every household of the lowland gentry, whether directly engaged in them or not.
She was the daughter of Sarah Jane Campbell, who survived until 1675 and thus outlived many of her own generation, passing only two years before Jane herself. The Campbell name carried with it deep associations across the western Scottish lowlands and Highlands alike, marking Jane's maternal kindred as part of one of the most extensive and storied of Scotland's clans. The specific seat of her birth, Cumloden in the parish district of Larg, lay within the historic region of Galloway — a country of rolling hills, ancient lairdships, and Presbyterian conviction during the years of her life.
Jane was joined in marriage to Patrick James McKie, uniting her with the McKie line whose lairds were long associated with the lands of Larg. From this union there is recorded one son, John, who would become Laird of Larg, born in 1640 and surviving until 1721. Through him the McKie inheritance passed forward, and through him also the bloodline reached, in time, the American branches of the family that the present register documents.
Though the particulars of Jane's daily life are not preserved in this archive, her place within the Galloway gentry, her Campbell maternal heritage, and her continuation of the McKie lairdship through her son secure her memory.
Jane was the compiler's 10× great-grandmother on the paternal-grandfather (PP) line.
