Biography
From the Hyten family archive; subject is Marion Hendersoune (1615–1688), a 10× great-grandmother of the compiler on the paternal-grandfather (PP) line. This entry covers her birth and parentage in Leslie, Fife, Scotland, her marriage to James Leslie, her daughter Bessie, and the broader context of 17th-century Lowland Scottish life. Notable: she represents the deep Scottish roots underlying the Henderson surname later carried into America.
Marion Hendersoune, born before the year 1615 in the parish of Leslie, in the county of Fife, Scotland, and laid to rest in February of 1688 in that same Scottish shire, stands among the earliest forebears recorded in the compiler's paternal-grandfather line. She was the daughter of Peter Patrick Henrysoune Henry and of Barbara Lindsay Johnston Henrysoune, the latter of whom survived until 1681. The family surname, here preserved in its older Scots orthography as Hendersoune, would in time be rendered more familiarly as Henderson in the records of her descendants.
Marion was joined in marriage to James Leslie, a union that bound her to one of the notable surnames of Fife, the very district from which her birthplace, Leslie, takes its name. From this marriage came at least one daughter known to the family record: Elizabeth, called Bessie, who was born in the year 1631 and through whom the line descends to the present compiler.
The Fife of Marion's lifetime was a country of fishing villages, market towns, and parish kirks set along the Firth of Forth, a region long shaped by the Scottish Reformation and, during her adult years, by the upheavals of the Covenanting movement, the civil wars of the three kingdoms, and the restoration of the Stuart monarchy. Women of her station in seventeenth-century Lowland Scotland customarily lived their lives within the orbit of parish, household, and kin, with births, marriages, and burials marked in the registers of the established kirk. That Marion's name endures across nearly four centuries is itself testimony to the careful preservation of such records by her descendants.
Marion was the compiler's 10× great-grandmother on the paternal-grandfather (PP) line, and stands among the Scottish progenitors of the Henderson branch of the family.
