Biography

From the Hyten family archive; subject is John Cox (circa 1518–circa 1589), a 15× great-grandparent of the compiler in the paternal-grandfather (PP) line. This entry covers his approximate birth and death at Lindfield in Sussex, his marriage to Elizabeth Ferral, his son John Cox, and contextual notes on Tudor-era Sussex village life. Notable: among the earliest documented forebears in the Cox line.

John Cox (circa 1518 – circa 1589) stands among the earliest documented forebears in the compiler's paternal-grandfather line, his life unfolding entirely within the parish of Lindfield in Sussex, England. He was born about 1518, in the years when Henry VIII still sat upon the English throne and the great religious upheavals of the Reformation had yet to overtake the realm. By the time of his death, approximately 1589, he had witnessed the reigns of four Tudor monarchs and the establishment of the Elizabethan settlement that would shape English life for generations to come.

Lindfield, the village in which John Cox passed his days, lay in the Weald of Sussex, a region long associated with timber, ironworking, and modest agriculture. In the sixteenth century it was a settled parish of yeomen, husbandmen, and tradesmen, gathered about the parish church of All Saints. The villages of the Weald were tightly knit communities in which families intermarried over many generations, and surnames such as Cox endured among the local population for centuries. It is in such a setting that John Cox lived out his life.

He took to wife Elizabeth Ferral, sometimes rendered Ferall in the older records, and of this union came a son also named John Cox, in keeping with the long-standing English custom of bestowing the father's Christian name upon the eldest son. Through this younger John the line was carried forward into succeeding generations, eventually reaching, by paths spanning the Atlantic and the centuries, the compiler of this register.

Of John Cox's particular occupation, station, or personal character, the surviving record offers no certain account. What remains is the framework of names, dates, and place — a Sussex man of the Tudor age, husband to Elizabeth, father of John. John was the compiler's 15× great-grandfather on the paternal-grandfather (PP) line.
