Biography
From the Hyten family archive; subject is Elizabeth 'Betty' Burton (1792–1852), a 5× great-grandmother of the compiler in the paternal-grandfather (PP) line. This entry covers her Yorkshire birth, parentage, transatlantic migration to Indiana, marriage to George Chapman, and surviving daughter Isabella. Notable: English-born immigrant ancestor who settled in Parke County, Indiana, during its early frontier period.
Elizabeth Burton, known affectionately within the family as Betty, was born on the 21st of January 1792 in Yorkshire, England, the daughter of Richard Burton (1751–1826) and Isabel Middleton (1761–1822). She entered the world during a period when the woolen districts and dales of Yorkshire were undergoing significant transformation, as the early machinery of the Industrial Revolution began to reshape long-established rural and cottage economies across northern England.
Though the precise circumstances of her removal from England are not preserved in the family record, Betty's life carried her ultimately across the Atlantic to the western reaches of the young American republic. She came in time to be united in marriage to George Chapman, and from that union the family register preserves one daughter: Isabella Chapman, born in 1820 and surviving until 1898. Through Isabella the line would continue forward into the generations from which the compiler descends.
The later chapters of Betty's life unfolded in Parke County, Indiana, a region opened to settlement only in the 1820s and still bearing the rough character of the frontier when she came to reside there. Parke County in the first half of the nineteenth century was a country of timbered hills, mill creeks, and freshly cleared farmland along the Wabash watershed, settled by a mingled population of upland Southerners, transplanted New Englanders, and immigrants newly arrived from the British Isles. For a woman born in Yorkshire in the closing years of the eighteenth century, the journey to such a place represented a remarkable arc of geography and circumstance.
Elizabeth Burton died on the 2nd of December 1852 in Parke County at the age of sixty, having outlived both of her parents by some three decades. Her father Richard had died in 1826 and her mother Isabel in 1822.
