Biography

From the Hyten family archive; subject is John Calvin White Sr (1793–1870), a 5× great-grandparent of the compiler in the paternal-grandmother (PM) line. This entry covers his birth in County Durham, England, his parentage, his transatlantic settlement in coastal Maine, his marriage and known issue, and the broader era context of English emigration to the New England seaboard in the early nineteenth century.

John Calvin White Sr (1793–1870) was born on the 29th of June, 1793, at Little Rainton in County Durham, England, the son of William Grottley White (1760–1841) and Anne Hooper (1764–1839). Into the colliery-dotted countryside of north-eastern England he came at a moment when Britain stood at war with revolutionary France, when industry was rapidly transforming the working districts of Durham, and when emigration across the Atlantic was drawing a steady current of English families toward the harbors of New England.

In the course of his lifetime, John Calvin removed from his native Durham to the rugged coast of Down East Maine, settling at length in Jonesport, in Washington County — a fishing and shipbuilding community on the easternmost shore of the United States. The Maine coast of the early and middle nineteenth century was a hard but vital country, peopled by mariners, coopers, and small farmers whose lives turned upon the tides; it was into such a community that John Calvin cast his lot, and there he passed the remainder of his days.

He was joined in marriage to Jane White, and of this union is recorded a son, William Flagg White (1824–1898), through whom the line continued into the generations that would in time descend to the compiler. Whether other children were born to John Calvin and Jane is not preserved in the present record.

John Calvin White Sr departed this life on the 28th of September, 1870, at Jonesport, having attained the age of seventy-seven years. He had outlived both his parents by some three decades and had witnessed in his lifetime the transformation of his adopted country through industrial expansion, civil war, and the opening of the western frontier.

John Calvin White Sr was the compiler's 5× great-grandfather along the paternal-grandmother (PM) line.
